So my nice brother has been bringing me to eat at several nice places in NYC.

Had my first really authentic Korean dinner at Kum Gang San on 32nd street today. Its a 9 chop dinner (with 9 different banchan). There was this really interesting one that I really liked with marinated pollack and as usual there was kongnamul (soybean sprouts), dubu jorim (tofu simmered in soy sauce, a little bit of sesame oil, minced garlic, and chopped green onion) and japchae (translucent yam noodles accampanied with a variety of vegetable and beef in a slightly-sweet garlic sauce) etc.

and then for mains we had galbi
it really tickles your taste buds after you nicely wrapped in a cabbage after dipping it in korean soybean paste. This is a beef dish made from beef short ribs, marinated for hours and grilled over charcoal

and Kimchi Chigae with codfish

So anyway, so exciting i was googling for the exact spelling of the names of the dishes, then this website recommended Kum Gang San for these two main dishes can! how cool.

We had dinner at Kiri yesterday, this another awesome authentic japanese restaurant. The whole place was full of Japanese who were going on and on in Japanese so fast I couldnt figure out what they were saying=( this is the result of studying jap for 4 years and then not using it for another 4 years. NULLIFY totally.

Met up with Henry today and coincidentally NYC was celebrating International Culture Day with processions, food fair and pasar malam-like fair right in the centre of Manhattan. Damn cool! And then went shopping along 5th Ave for the rest of the day, and there were a lot of great deals going on.

Tmr gonna wake up early, head for dimsum at Chinatown with brother, then meet with Monika for dessert near Central Park and then with Carene to hang out at MOMA, Museum of Modern Art. Finally off to Teuscher's to get champagne truffles to bring home and maybe Hersheys too if I have time. And then to JFK.

Yay! looking forward to taking airplane on our national carrier tmr night=)

So this is how the story goes. Yesterday, I went shopping with Sha at Biarwood Mall after staring into my microscope for 6 hours straight. (today i spent 9 hours, thanks to the training from yesterday).

Care to know how the story proceeds?

So now, I can strike off a couple of things off my now pseudo wishlist.
I bought super a lot of clothes, maybe I needed an outlet after crazy labs and finals. So instead of the Hollister Polo-tee, i got a similar looking yellow one from aeropostale, and i got 2 dresses from Forever 21 and lotsa other clothes =D

sha looking at the whole range of piercings and she said she wanted to get a belly button piercing. I was like NOOOOO. Very painful!=S

ohyar victorias secret was having a semi-annual sale. Thats where some of my money went to too!=D

so as usual, we always shop until briarwood mall closes.=S

then this is sha and me after all the shops were closing and we were ready to catch the last bus home....

okay call this camera whoring, i dont really care, but dont you think this pokka dotted dress that i got from forever 21 is really really pretty!its my favourite purchase yesterday=D

okay down to more serious stuff. This is how Natural Sciences Building, the one im doing research at, looks like from the Diag. I took this photo when I was lying on the diag during lunch break.

hahahah a blob of fats lying on the grass near the Diag.

the bright beautiful sun above the diag

and this is my beautiful sophisticated microscope that i use to peer my flies under. It has a camera attached to it, so i was spending 9 hours taking photographs of the flies' eyes for documentation. Its really such an arduous process: from selecting the virgin flies, to creating the male transgene flies, to crossing them, and culturing them for a week, and then screening for the transgene progeny, and selection of the intermediate representative phenotype to finally selecting two "lucky" flies that pose themselves in a nice way, when they die, for the camera after I freeze them.
That was a really bad run on sentence but I dont care.=P It has to fit in one sentence to sound like a mouthful.

anyway, dont you think that the optic light ( the two metal tubes that intercross) look like that evil character in spiderman 2? I cant recall his name, but that octopus looking like monster with all those optic-light looking hands....=S

RUTH!! my ibuddy. Had dinner over at her place two days ago, 'cos i was leaving already and shes going off to detroit to teach! Dont you thnk she looks very sweet and motherly, I wanna find a nice boyfriend for her (as if i really have the means) cos shes so sincere and nice to all her friends. But she says she got commitment fear too, hahaha

us again in her apartment. The previous shot was taken in her car, after we came back from grocery shopping at Meijers. Haha, yes not the best kinda outing I know.

This was taken like 2 weeks ago, when we were setting off fireworks in the field near Island Drive. Tianhan was screaming RUN for your LIVES frantically after he set off the fireworks because its illegal to do that in Michigan. I remember the other time when we set off fireworks was for Shenye's Birthday. So sweeeet=D

heres a really bad video that i took when we set off the fireworks.

Im leaving Ann Arbor tomorrow evening! To New York City over the weekend and then i will be back in Singapore on the 26th. YAYYYY. Time to hang out with my girlfriends=D

Chromosmome walking

One recombinant phage obtained from a phage library made by the partial EcoRI digestion of a eukaryotic genome can be used to isolate another recombinat phage containing a neighbouring segment of eukaryotic DNA. This chromosome walking illustrates how to start at molecular landmark A and get to target gene D.

Proof that im studying bio okay=P Anyway i think this chromosome walking is the coolest term i have seen among all the really uncreative biology terminology.

I stepped into media services library at UGLi, wanting to borrow some movie titles to watch over the weekend. Sensing my lack of direction on movies that i wanted to watch, the guy at the reception recommended this show.

The Last King of Scotland

Synopsis: A Scottish doctor on a Ugandan medical mission becomes irreversibly entangled with one of the world’s most barbaric figures: Idi Amin. Impressed by Dr. Garrigan’s brazen attitude in a moment of crisis, the newly self-appointed Ugandan President Amin hand picks him as his personal physician and closest confidante. Though Garrigan is at first flattered and fascinated by his new position, he soon awakens to Amin’s savagery--and his own complicity in it. Horror and betrayal ensue as Garrigan tries to right his wrongs and escape Uganda alive.

FYI, Uganda is an East African country bordered by Kenya ,Rwanda and Congo. Idi Amin was one the most brutal dictatorial martyr in the history of Uganda, which used to be a British colony. Amin was responsible for more the massacre of more than 300,000 Ugandan lives, most of whom were from the opposition party.

I felt this show did good justice to portraying Amin's brutality. Though most of the film was based on facts, but Nicholas Gariggan, the leading actor-cum-doctor in the movie, was a fictitious character. I just felt maybe we didn't need any fictional character to reflect Amin's cruelty at all. But perhaps, this also helped to achieve a balance in an otherwise heavily skewed perspective of Amin. I really love shows about Africa, because it brings back great memories about the warmth and simplicity of the Zimbabweans. Perhaps they might be worrying about their next meal, but they would never refuse your request, or take those smiles off their faces. The maize filled, seemingly unending fields and the dances & songs perfectly set those memories back in place.

Btw, there were plenty of REALLY gruesome scenes in the movie, and there were many great references and historical digs made at British colony, Amin's character etc etc. Definitely read up a little on Uganda before you embark on this brilliant show released just last year.

Way to go, nadal, make it three at Roland Garros!

Nadal Continues His Clay-Court Dominance at French Open
By JULIET MACUR
Published: June 5, 2007

PARIS, June 4 — Dressed in his signature pirate outfit, bright blue, sweat-stained bandanna sitting above his brow, Rafael Nadal won his fourth-round match against Lleyton Hewitt on Monday.

Rafael Nadal has not lost a set during the French Open this year.
The victory brought him one step closer to his third consecutive French Open title, but also set up a match-up between him and his mentor and fellow Majorcan, 30-year-old Carlos Moya, in the quarterfinals.

Until now at Roland Garros, their only competition has been on PlayStation, in soccer, between rounds here. Their games have been fiery, but friendly.

“You get so nervous, like if it was a tennis match,” Moya said. “But it’s good to have some fun. There’s a lot of pressure here, and it’s a way not to think about tennis.”

Nadal wrote about those matches on his Internet blog, saying Moya was “quite good and assertive.” Both were assertive on the court on Monday, though, with Nadal having to work extra hard in the third set of his match. Hewitt was the first player Nadal has played here who is ranked inside the top 45.

Hewitt, overwhelmed by Nadal’s forehands and the spins on them, lost the first two sets of their match, but he did not let go of the third set easily. He pushed that set to a tiebreaker, hit a forehand into the net to end the match. He said the sun had blinded him. Nadal won, 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (5).

“Early on, he was sort of in his own,” said Hewitt, the 14th seed. “It was hard for me to press or do anything against him. In the end, I just had to try to get some rhythm out of him, and try to make it a bit of a match in the third set.”

Now Nadal will play his mentor on the men’s tour, Moya, who on Monday played a match pitting two players with a combined age of 65. Through it, Moya never felt his age.

**side note: This is the first year of French Open in which none of the American players got through the 2nd round. Even seed no. 3 Andy Roddick. What a shame!!

Movie 1 recommendation

As Good as It Gets is a 1997 film which tells the story of an obsessive-compulsive, cantankerous, and homophobic writer named Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson) who, because of his anxiety disorder, lives in a world that has shrunk to about the size of his apartment and the books he authors. Nevertheless, and despite himself, he befriends his regular waitress (Helen Hunt), a single mother, and his homosexual neighbour (Greg Kinnear). It is a drama played out among flawed people in an imperfect and postmodern world.

I thought this movie was a little slow with its pace, but director James Brooks is probably one of the most sensitive ingenuous man i have ever seen. He has such a great eye for details that although as the movie progresses, one doesn't really understand how the plot is going to unfold, but everything ties up beautifully at the end. An uncertain but a potentially bright future for Melvin whom, through his love for Helen, eventually picks up himself from his self-collapsed world of OCDs and obsessions with health and personal hygiene, is indeed a bittersweet ending to this intricately woven movie.

Movie 2

The Holiday is a 2006 romantic comedy set in the United States and the United Kingdom. It is directed by Nancy Meyers and stars Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black. Two women fresh from a breakup trade homes impusively online, to find that this change of address changes their lives.

Why watch this movie?
1. Jude Law.
2. Cameron Diaz.
3. Jude Law falls in love with Cameron Diaz. AWwwwww.
4. The 2 people who cannot be more wrong for each other falls madly in love over the short holiday. Jude Law, a single father from London with 2 awfully cute daughter "who sews, and has a cow in his backyard" and Cameron Diaz, a movie trailer maker, career-minded CEO of her company in L.A., who is filthy rich and distrusts commitment to relationships.
5. Directed by Nancy Meyers, the same woman who did Something's Gotta Give.
6. Theres an awfully cute dog in the show.
7. For not so good looking man, yes, Jack Black eventually got Kate Winslet through his sincerity.
8. This film was written specifically with actors Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black in mind.

How to make it better:
Watch it with a bunch of girls (whom you don't really know), sit around with lotsa cheesecake, dorittos, pop and triscuit snacks with tomato, cheese, red peppers and zeisty italian dressing. Scold Jasper (helen's ex) vehemently whenever he appears on the screen and go awww at every Jude Law appearance.

CRap crap crap i am doing so badly for all my courses in spring!!=(
i think its because im so distracted all the time cos i have absolutely no mood to study and i need to find back my motivation!!=( I really lack mental strength and i dont know how i lost it along the way. I remember i used to be really focused and obsessed about getting things right. But now I just give in so easily. So easily distracted and not focused enough!!

After my midterms yesterday i went to borrow a couple of books to help me reflect on myself. Hope they wil come in handy.

Oh yea and i borrowed this circuit training for women handbook, so i wll be working hard to get back into shape before i get back to singapore.......=S

On a side note, had super nice chilling session with a couple of springers at studio4 and blue yesterday. Came back at 6.30 am and my body clock is like screwed again!=((
